While all of our patients are excited to see the benefits of their PRP treatments, some become nervous before their first consultation because they’re not sure what to expect. Some are still wondering: What is PRP, and how will it work for me? If you have chronic or acute joint pain, would like to rejuvenate your appearance, improve hair growth, or even enhance your sexual experience, PRP could be right for you.
How it Works
You may be thinking, “How can PRP treatments provide such a large range of benefits?” PRP, or Platelet Rich Plasma, uses your body’s natural healing process to enhance, repair, and regenerate tissue. Our blood is made of plasma and red and white blood cells, but it also has platelets that contain growth factors for cellular healing, with the purpose of clotting at wound sites. PRP works by increasing the concentration of these growth factors in the blood, leading to faster development of new tissue.
So what does it all mean?
By drawing just 2-4 tablespoons of blood, increasing its concentration of platelets, and injecting it at the spot of injury, we can generate new tissue where existing tissue has been damaged. For joint or tendon injuries, the platelets are able to restore tendons, ligamentous proteins, and cartilage, with minimal downtime and risk. Since PRP treatments are created using your own blood, there is no chance of allergic or foreign-body reactions. It works the same way for skin and hair rejuvenation, as platelets create new growth cells and stimulate collagen in the treated area. Both men and women also use PRP to generate healthier and more functional tissue in areas of sexual response, not only to increase pleasure, but also to improve male performance and resolve female urinary incontinence.
What to Expect
We strive to make our treatments as easy as possible for patients, and most report that their procedure caused some discomfort rather than pain. To minimize this discomfort, we use numbing cream and/or a local anesthetic before injections. Patients find procedures convenient because of their small downtime, and all of our PRP treatments take an hour or less to complete!
