Hair Loss Treatment with Platelet Rich Plasma
PRP for the treatment of hair loss has been very successful for conditions such as alopecia areata and androgenic alopecia (hereditary male or female hair loss). Research has shown that Platelet Rich Plasma offers improvement in hair growth in many patients. Cytokines and growth factors (the healing properties of the blood) found in platelets can be concentrated and then injected into the areas of hair loss to stimulate hair growth.
Any person suffering hair loss from alopecia areata or male or female pattern baldness is a candidate for treatment.
Alopecia areata (also known as spot baldness) is an autoimmune disease in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body, usually from the scalp.
Androgenic alopecia (known as male or female pattern hair loss) is the most common cause of hair loss and by the age of 50 affects half of males and a quarter of females.
The sooner the hair loss is treated the more hair follicles that can be saved to prevent permanent baldness. PRP will not work in areas where there are no active hair follicles. This is determined using a specialized camera on the scalp. Thin and wispy hair where the hair follicles are still active will respond the best to PRP treatment.
Improvement in hair growth can typically be expected approximately three months after PRP treatment. Our treatment protocol can provide significant stimulation of hair regrowth and hair follicle rejuvenation. Hair regrowth can help to improve self-esteem and confidence.
This is an in-office procedure which can be done during a person’s lunch hour. A small sample of blood (2-4 tablespoons) is obtained from the patient’s arm (just like getting blood drawn). This blood sample is processed in an FDA-approved device to separate the platelets and plasma from other components like red blood cells. These concentrated platelets contain powerful growth factors and stem cells which have profound biological effects on hair follicles and skin.
Under comfortable local anesthesia, this powerful combination of growth factors, cytokines, and other proteins is painlessly injected into the area of the scalp where weak hair follicles exist.
Microneedling of the skin immediately following the injection is used to activate the platelets. This comfortable clinic procedure takes less than an hour to perform and patients may resume all activities, including workouts, shampooing, etc. immediately after the procedure. Mild soreness and redness of the scalp typically lasts less than a day and improved hair growth can be measured in a matter of weeks.
As with any hair regrowth treatment, results can be subtle. At PRP Regeneration Specialists, we know that our PRP protocols are providing significant stimulation of hair regrowth and hair follicle rejuvenation with our Hair Check measurement system. Hair growth is measured at 3-month intervals to track progress.
By monitoring hair growth with the Hair Check Device over time, we can determine when the improvement in hair growth from PRP slows down or plateaus, eliminating the guesswork as to when to administer PRP again. At that time, additional treatment with PRP may be necessary to maintain the desired results. PRP without PTM (placental tissue matrix) may need to be repeated every 3-4 months.
PTM is an all-natural treatment that utilizes powerful growth factors, collagens, extra cellular proteins and bioactive molecules naturally found in placental tissues. These placental tissue components may provide your body with the foundation in needs to reduce pain and inflammation, restore tissue (hair follicles), and reduce scarring. The product is derived from human placental tissues, donated by volunteer U.S. based donors after a live, healthy C-section delivery.
